57th Alumni Update October 07. 2013

posted Nov 25, 2013, 8:38 AM by 57th Alumni Association   [ updated Nov 25, 2013, 8:39 AM ]

Dear Friend of the 57th,

The 57th Alumni Association's (AA) reunion that held the 26th-29th of  September in Fairborn/Dayton, OH this year has come and gone and my memories from this reunion are that it was great!  If you were unable to attend this reunion do make plans now to join us in Branson, MO the 11th-14th of September 2014.

What made the 57th AA reunion so great this year?  People started arriving on Wednesday (25th) in anticipation of who was coming and what we were going to be doing at the National Museum of the Air Force.  Alumni started registering for the reunion Thursday morning and the process continued all day. Thursday evening in the 57th AA hospitality room an assortment of tasty sandwiches, pasta and brownies were available to the alumni with a pay as you go bar. I was told that the renewing of acquaintances continued until around midnight within the hotel.

On Friday morning the 57th AA was invited by the National Museum of the Air Force to enter the museum prior to its normal operating hours so we could get a guided tour inside an AC-130 gunship. Friday would turn out to be a day devoted to viewing the exhibits and aircraft on display at the museum until 1500 hour's.  At 1500 hour the 57th AA gathered in Memorial Park to dedicate the 57th AA Memorial Plaque.  The dedication ceremony was emceed by Col (R) Floyd Badsky who was also the design, development & procurement Team Leader. The dedication ceremony was indeed meaningful and magnificent!  We were honored to have the Wright Patterson  Air Force Base Honor Guard to post the colors during our ceremony. Many of you contributed to the 57th AA Memorial Plaque Project, again, thanks for supporting this project (attached is a photo of the plaque). Friday evening back at the hotel we had a fantastic dinner and in a setting where we could enjoy each other's company. In addition, we had two very special guests from the 57th Bomb Wing who were having their 47th reunion in the hotel at the same time.  The president of the 57th Bomb Wing and one of their alumni, a WWII hero, addressed our group and their presentation was just outstanding or better yet it could be summed up by saying, "WOW"!

Saturday morning we held our 57th AA 2013 Business Meeting and the complete minutes of that meeting are posted on our website (http://www.57thalumni.com).  Officer & Director at Large positions filled during the meeting are as follows:

o   Vice-President: Mike Welch was elected to fill position till 2016

o   Treasurer: Gary Snyder was re-elected to fill position till 2016

o   Director at Large # 1: Larry Graham was re-elected to fill position till 2016

o   Director at Large # 3: Mike Peters was elected to fill position till 2016

Some will notice that Paul Zender no longer fills the position of Vice-President.  Per Paul's request his name was not placed in nomination this year.  I must say a few words about Paul, but what can I say about him without writing a book?  First I will start by just saying, "Thanks for doing a job extremely well".  Paul wasn’t just a figurehead, he worked tirelessly in the position of Vice-President!  We have spent many hours on the phone with each other getting the 57th Alumni Association to where it is today.  When the 57th reunion was being held in Altus, Oklahoma, Paul opened doors for us within the community that many could not have.  In 2010, we were faced with a major problem when within two weeks of the reunion in Altus the caterer for our banquet left town.  Using his connections, Paul was able to acquire another caterer on very short notice for the banquet and yes, he saved our tush. Paul will be remembered as one of the founders of the 57th Alumni Association and someone who provided countless hours of support.   Paul is a true friend of ours and the 57th Alumni Association.  It has been said, "A friend is someone who will bail you out of jail but your best friend is the one sitting next to you saying 'boy was that fun'".  It has been fun Paul and I will be calling on you!

Saturday evening started with a delightful social time and at 1835 we were called to dinner.  CMSgt (R) Lew Shedd was the emcee for the evening and he kept the evening lively by engaging with the audiences and our guest.  The Wright Brass, an element of the Wright Paterson Air Force Base Band of Flight, provided music for us and then the speaker's podium was turned over to one of the 57th former commanders Brigadier General (R) Dick Bundy.  He rocked!  The evening was just outstanding.

Today, I am happy to report that our 57th Alumni Association Membership has grown to eighty-one (81) Lifetime Member and seventeen (17) Annual Members.  Are you a member?  Your membership would help us reach our goal of 100 member before  Christmas 2013. Please help us keep the 57th alive by becoming a 57th Alumni Association member. Visit our website at http://www.57thalumni.com for a printable application or use the application attached to this e-mail.

Reunion photos for 2013 will be posted soon on the 57th AA website,  keep a lookout for them. Now, one more request, please forward this e-mail to someone you knew in the 57th so we can get the word out about our 57th Alumni Association.

57th Alumni Association Update October 24, 2012

posted Mar 12, 2013, 10:36 AM by 57th Alumni Association   [ updated Mar 12, 2013, 10:42 AM ]

The 57th Alumni Association reunion for 2012 was held in Altus, OK.  It was a huge success and the fond memories of this event will last for a lifetime, for those who attended.  You were missed if you were unable to attend this year.  So please make plans now to join us at our next reunion, scheduled for September 26, 2013 in Dayton/Fairborn, OH.  Let me share with you some of the highlights from this year’s reunion.

Alumni started arriving early this year, as we had individuals already waiting at the hotel when we arrived on Wednesday afternoon the 10th.  I sensed immediately that we were in for a great reunion. Throughout the day, on Thursday, the arrivals continued and that evening we moved over to Luigi’s for our official icebreaker, where there were lots of hugs, handshakes and the always inevitable “war stories.”  Our guests came from several states, including MN, FL, KS, IN, KY, OK, TX, AR and GA, just to name a few.

On Friday morning yours truly had the honor of speaking to our association members on the subject of our 57th Heritage.  That afternoon we took an Altus Air Force base tour arranged by Ms. Patricia Weyer of the Public Affairs Office.  On the tour we were given the 97th Air Mobility Wing briefing by the base leadership, a tour of the C-17 flight and loadmaster simulators as well as the KC-135 boom operator simulator.  Included in the tour was a chance to visit the Weapons simulator where everyone had an opportunity to fire a few rounds. Then Friday evening we had an outstanding barbecue dinner that had been arranged by Mr. Paul Zender.  Many of us had seconds or thirds and the ribs were the first to go.  “Oh, the food was so good!”

Our association business meeting was held on Saturday morning. During this meeting the 57th Alumni Association members elected three officers & three directors who will serve for the next two years.

                 Ø  President: Woodie Hall, from 2012 - 2014

Ø  Secretary: Wim Wetzel, from 2012 - 2014

Ø  Director at Large # 2: Floyd Badsky, from 2012 - 2014

Ø  Director at Large # 4: Jim Doornbos, from 2012 - 2014

Ø  Treasurer position: Kevin McAuliffe resigned his position as he has relocated from Altus to St Louis, MO.  Gary Snyder was elected to fill the remainder of Kevin McAuliffe’s term of office (2013).

Ø  With Gary Snyder’s election to the treasurer position that left open a Director at large position.  Mike Welch was elected to fill the remainder of Gary's term which will be to 2013. Mike will be Director at Large # 1.

Note: The 57th Alumni Association business meeting minutes are posted on the website.

While the 57th Alumni Association business meeting was in progress the spouses were treated to a guided tour of the Museum of the Western Prairie in downtown Altus. Upon completing the tour, the group enjoyed lunch at the Plaza Restaurant.  The tour and luncheon were hosted by Ms. Debbie Davis, who did a fantastic job planning this event.

On Saturday evening at 6 pm the Alumni gathered at Club Altus on Altus Air Force Base for our social and reunion banquet dinner.  I am pleased to report that we had 102 in attendance.

Some of the evening highlights are as follows:

·    We honored a long time friend Mr. Gail Miller by inducting him into the 57th Alumni Association as an Honorary Member.  Mr. Miller was a navigator and then a pilot during WWII, Chief of Training for the 443rd MAW, served in the reserves with the rank of Colonel and retired from the reserves and civil service in 1989.

·   Our keynote speaker was Maj Gen Tim Zadalis who lifted all of us with his stupendous address.  We are also pleased and honored to have General Zadalis as one of our new Alumni Association Lifetime Members.

Alumni Association Membership: Prior to our reunion our association membership totaled fifty-one (51) Lifetime Members and eight (8) Annual Members.  Today, I am delighted to report that our membership has grown to Sixty-one (61) Lifetime Members and nine (9) Annual Members.  Help us keep the 57th alive by becoming a 57th Alumni Association member. Visit our website at http://www.57thalumni.com for a printable application or use the one attached to this e-mail.

Bronze Plaque Project: In September I sent an e-mail requesting donations to our 2013 bronze plaque project.  I am so delighted to tell you that we currently have $1637.00 donated to our project.  For those who have donated; ” THANK YOU!”  If you have not donated to this awesome project please consider doing so today?

2013 Reunion: Starting on 1 November, 2012 you may make reservations for the 2013 reunion in Fairborn/Dayton, OH.  Our reunion hotel is the Holiday Inn, Dayton/Fairborn, which is located right in the heart of numerous local attractions, including downtown Dayton, the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the Mall at Fairfield Commons & the Greene Town Centre. Why not make it a family event because we will only be minutes away from some awesome venues.  Room rates are $100.00 per day plus tax. Call 937-431-4613 to make your reservations and tell them you are with the 57th Alumni Association.  Members who own RVs will again attend next year since there are numerous camps in the area including one FamCamp on the base.

Looking forward to seeing you in Dayton/Fairborn, OH in September 2013 :)

Sincerely,

Woodie Hall

President 57th Alumni Association

P.S.

For those who were at the reunion, please send me pictures that I can post on our website.  E-mail them to alumni57th@gmail.com or if you have too many to e-mail please send them to me via USPS to Woodie Hall, 5305 Forest Breeze Ct, Saint Cloud, FL 34771.

Alumni Update January 2012

57th Alumni Association

70th Anniversary 1942 – 2012

Happy New Year Alumni!

2012 is already off to a great start! As many of you already know the 57th Alumni Association (AA) reunion is set for October the 11th – 14th, 2012. We have already reserved the Altus Air force Base Family Community Center (FCC) for our reunion banquet (October 13th) and we have contracted with the Holiday Inn Express for our lodging at a daily rate of $77.00. Further reunion details will be forthcoming in a later e-mail or via posting on the alumni website.

How would you like to win two free tickets to the reunion banquet on October 13th? To do so, just submit to us a design of a patch that we could use to honor and celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the 57th. Requirements are as follows:

1.  The patch design must be completely original artwork. Freehand styles or computer design accepted.

2.  Size limitations: Design may be any shape as long as it fits within a 4-inch square.

3.   Artwork may use up to 4 colors (not including black or white).

4.  The patch must have the words "70th Anniversary" and "57th, TCS, 57th MAS, 57th AS, and 57th WPS designated on it somewhere.

5.  Keep design simple. Large font and fewer details will make the patch stand out better.

6.  To submit your design(s) e-mail to: alumni57th@gmail.com.

7.  Your design must arrive not later than April 30th, 2012.

8.  The 57th AA Board of Directors will choose the winning patch from the designs submitted.

The 57th Alumni Association continues to unite old friends, stir fond memories and rekindle the crewmember spirit that we all remember. Our Association is organized for the following purposes:

1. To provide social and recreational activities for and to maintain fraternal contacts between its members via our Reunions and Website;

2. Commemorate the aviation history of the 57thTroop Carrier Squadron, 57th Military Airlift Squadron, 57th Airlift Squadron and the 57th Weapons Squadron of the United States Air Force (USAF), its predecessor and mission-successor organizations;

3. Foster true patriotism, to maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom and at all times to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;

4. To make financial grants or awards as the will of the majority of members dictates and the recipient of such funds or awards to qualify under Section 501 (c) (19) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1984 or corresponding provisions of any future U.S. Internal Revenue Code;

5. To carry on programs to perpetuate the memory of deceased veterans and members of the Armed Forces and to comfort their survivors.

Over the past two years, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of alumni participating in fraternal contacts between its members via our reunions and websites (http://www.57thalumni.com and https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_61965127586#!/groups/57th.alumni/). Have you joined?  Also, you made lifelong friends and shared a lifetime of memories while you were with the 57th. If you're still in touch with an old buddy who doesn't know about the Association yet, be sure to either have him/her contact us or send their name and address to us so we can get them an application. This Association is about old friends and fond memories. A few more old friends helping us keep some of those somewhat foggy memories straight couldn't hurt (assuming they don't just clutter things up with erroneous information and conflicting details which might ruin a perfectly good war story)(application form is attached).

Have you been to the 57th Alumni Association website lately?  Please help us update the 57th Squadron Directory.  Visit the website @ http://57thalumni.com and check the Squadron Directory to ensure you are listed and that all information is correct.  We have over seven hundred names in our Squadron Directory but only two hundred eight-two e-mail addresses. Any and all assistance to help locate 57th alumni would be appreciated (note: if you do not wish to have your contact information depicted on the website just let us know as we also maintain an off-line database).

Your Board of Directors continues to work on strengthening the association by recruiting and appointing individuals to the board to further the causes and management of the organization. With delight we welcome the following:

John Hendrick - Veterans Benefits Advisor - Works under the Vice – President

Don Jenkins - Alumni Membership Solicitor - Works under the Secretary

Troy Fore & Dennis Lenhart - Fund Raising Committee - Works under the Treasurer

Cecil Fultz - Tax & Non Profit Advisor - Works under the Treasurer

We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated, energetic group of people willing to work in support of the 57th Alumni Association.  By the way, I am seeking a news letter editorJ.

Until the next time...With all good thoughts,

Woodie Hall

Alumni Update - Reunion 2011 - T-Shirt

posted Dec 15, 2010, 9:23 AM by 57th Alumni Association

57th Alumni;

This has been an awesome year for the 57th Alumni!  Let me reflect back just a bit on this past year. We started our efforts last January to contact 57th members so we could come together for a reunion.  Thanks to the perseverance of your reunion committee we soon had located over two hundred alumni members and a reunion was set for Memorial Day weekend. On Friday evening we had a great turn out for the ice breaker at Luigi’s. On Saturday morning the base opened up the static display C-141 for tours and the interest and love for this aircraft could be seen on the faces of those renewing their acquaintance. Then Saturday evening approximately 100 came for our sit down dinner and we were honored to have the 58th Airlift Squadron Commander as our guest speaker. On Sunday afternoon we finished off the reunion activities with a huge barbeque cookout.  An awesome weekend and there is no way I could mention all of the wonderful individual reunions that took place. We were pleased to have individuals from all over the US.  Our reunion in May of 2010 was made up mostly of members who served in the 57th Military Airlift Squadron and the rest served in the 57th Airlift Squadron (some in both). After the reunion in Altus I started thinking about how we could expand the reunion and especially how we might go about contacting some WWII 57th members.

While doing research to set up the 57th Alumni website (http://www.57thalumni.com) I was able to make contact with the 375th Troop Carrier Group reunion president (The 57th Troop Carrier Squadron (TCS) was assigned to the 375th during WWII).  Although the 375th no longer holds a reunion the president was able to give me 50 names he had of 57th TCS members.  When supplying the names the 375th reunion president said to me, “Woodie our last reunion was 2006, we are old and the health of many is not good so you will be lucky to find 25 from this list still alive”.  Still determined to locate some 57th WWII members I sent a personal letter to each address provided. In turn, I am now in contact with three members that are in good health and delighted to hear about our reunion activities. Twenty-three of the fifty WWII members are still with us. I am hoping we will be privileged to have some of the 57th TCS members with us at our next reunion.  Oh I must tell you that one of the 57th TCS members is 88 years young and still works as a CPA 30 working hours a week. Also, made contact with a member of the 55th TCS (the 55th, 56th, 57th & 58th TCS reported to the 375th TCG during WWII) who is 92 and works full time in real estate sales.  I may start looking for a job..…LOL.  Today we have almost six hundred names listed in the 57th Alumni directory on our website.  Spread the word about our website and help us populate the alumni directory.

Now, let me share the following with you:
